Weeks ended 2/7/2010 and 2/14/2010
The season is winding down as the Northwestern skaters head to the State Tournaments. Complete tournament coverage can be found at www.northwesternhockey.com over the next month.
Bantam B - 6 Wallingford Hawks Bantam B - 3
Goals scored by Bradley Touponse(3), Mark Vetter, Micheal Curcio and Sean Reimer. Assists by Luke McFadden(2), Mark Vetter and Drew Donzella. John Laucius and Sean Reimer were strong on defense. Goalie Carl Larosa had 15 saves for the win.
Bantam B - 10 ECHO Bantam B - 3
Goals scored by Sean Reimer, Austin Murphy, Harrison O'Connell, Luke McFadden (2), Alex Berg (2), and Bradley Touponse (2). Assists by Luke McFadden, Harrison O'Connell, Bradley Touponse, Riley Blais, Drew Stone and Drew Donzella. Gaolie Carl Larosa had a great game with 20 saves for the win.
Bantam B - 6 Wonderland Wizards Bantam B - 1
Goals scored by Micheal Curcio, Drew Stone, Kirk Burrows, Bradley Touponse, Luke McFadden and Alex Berg. Assisted by Bradley Touponse, Luke McFadden and Micheal Curcio. Alex Berg and Drew Donzella were strong on defense. Goalie Carl Larosa had 19 saves for the win.
Eschenbach Optik Squirt B - 4 Middlesex B - 1
Although outshot 27 to 14, the Icehawks managed a victory due in part to excellent goal tending by Win Salk. Mike Benson had many hard shots two of which Andre Vial gathered up and shoved in the net. Carter Matthews also found the back of the net twice, unassisted. Thomas Roche was solid on defense.
Eschenbach Optik Squirt B - 1 Simsbury B - 8
The Icehawks suffered a lopsided defeat when faced with a slick passing, hard skating Simsbury squad. Andre Vial scored the lone goal assisted by Christian Schopfer. Camden Fowler skated well in the loss. In net, Win Salk recorded 34 saves.
Eschenbach Optik Squirt B - 1 Wonderland Wizards Select - 3
The Icehawks skated well in an evenly matched game but ended up on the short side of the score board. Win Salk scored the only goal assisted by Carter Matthews and Aiden Busnel. Teddy Berner was aggressive forchecking and Jake Granacker held the blue line. Goalie Will Slohm recorded 35 saves.
Geary’s Plumbing Bantam A - 4 Darien A1 - 1
This game was fast paced with a lot of action at both ends. Northwestern got on the board first with a power play goal in the first. Darien tied the game up in the second with a power play goal of their own. Then Northwestern picked up their game and scored twice in two minutes and added another goal at the end of the third period. Patrick Hess and Lorenzo Stellato each had a goal and an assist. Tommy Barkal and Blaine McMahon each added goals with assists coming from Joey Hicks, Tyler Smith and Kevin Monagan. CJ Petruska was in goal for Northwestern coming up big with 29 saves.
Geary’s Plumbing Bantam A - 5 East Haven A1 - 1
Northwestern played solid in their last regular season game. Cole Case played hard and was rewarded with a goal and 2 assists. Christian Stuart and Jonathan Manzer each had a goal and an assist. Blaine McMahon and Tyler Kirkwood added goals and Kevin Monagan notched an assist. John Jones and Joey Hicks were solid on defense. Goalie Zach Sibert made 22 saves.
Girls U12 - 3 Wallingford U12 - 2
NW Girls U12 team executed some nice passing and came away with a win. The defense did there job holding the blue line well were Medison Corso, Gillian Schullery, and Meghan Maxey. Mackenzie Bokina had a hat trick assists went to Ally Helmus and Shannon Maxey. Taking the puck forward from defense were Anna Vailionis and Brooke Landry. Back checking and strong skating from Emma Colesworth and Julia Malsin. Improved play shown from Alyssa Malsin, Margaret O'Connell, Clare Costello, and Cameron Long. Taking control in the crease Emma Reynolds tallied 7 saves.
Girls U12 - 4 Hamden U12 - 4
The U12 girls came away with a tie against a strong Hamden team. Two goals a piece for Ally Helmus and Mackenzie Bokina. Assists went to Anna Vailionis and Helmus. Margaret O'Connell, Cameron Long, and Gillian Schullery were strong in the neutral zone. Goalie Emma Reynolds was very good, she had 17 very important saves. She is improving with every game. Defensivly strong were Brooke Landry and Madison Corso.
Girls U14 - 8 Ridgefield U14 - 0
Katie Butler and Rebecca Shvartsman each had 3 goals. Ally Helmus scored the remaining two goals. Julia Malsin gets credit for 3 assists, Helmus and Shvartsman also had assists. Brianna Walker, Brooke Landry, and Emma Colesworthy had assists as well. Annie Robbins was solid on defense, Casey Freund made 12 saves for the shut out.
Girls U14 - 2 New England Jr. Falcons U14 select - 4
Maisie Wanag had the first goal assisted by Julia Malsin and Rebecca Shvarstman. Shvartsman had the second goal assisted by Brooke Landry and Hanna DeMarco. Solid defense from Annie Robbins and Ally Helmus. Casey Freund made 22 saves in goal. The Falcons scored the fourth goal on an empty net as the Ice Hawks pulled the goalie in an attempt to tie it up.
Lake Group Media Mite A - 4 Wonderland Wizards - 2
Goals by Mason Von Jess, and one each from Ryan Fanella and Tim Manning were enough to topple the downstate mystics. Chris Sidebotham assisted on the Fanella goal. Trevor Davis and Evan Golembeske were solid on Defense. Daniel Manning made 10 saves in goal. NWCYH opened with 3 goals in the first and one in the second. The officials kept both penalty boxes full for a majority of the game.
Lake Group Media Mite A - 6 Watertown Mite A - 2
Mason Von Jess scored two goals. Other goals came from Chris Sidebotham, Jake Hoadley, Jack Zona, and Tim Manning. Trevor Davis was strong on defense and Daniel Manning made 20 saves in goal.
Lake Group Media Mite A - 6 Southern Mite A - 6
Another back-and-forth nail biter! Joseph Robinson led the scoring with 2 goals. Other scorers were Tim Manning, Chris Sidebotham, Hayden Giampietro, and Mason Von Jess. Assists were provided Trevor Davis(2), Jack Zona, Evan Golembeske, and Tim manning. Mason Von Jess was strong on defense. Daniel Manning made 13 saves in goal. After falling behind 6 - 5 in the third period, the Mite A's scored with just 1:48 left in the game to achieve the tie.
Lake Group Media Mite A - 5 Ridgefield Mite A - 0
Goals were scored by Mason Von Jess(3) Ryan Fanella, and Jake Hoadley. Assists were provided by Ryan Fanella and Matthias Paltauf. Hayden Giampietro made 13 saves to achieve his shutout win. The NWCYH Mite A's had met Ridgefiled in their first game of the season only to endure a 7-0 punishing loss. The Mighty Mite A's turned the table on their down state rivals. The two teams will meet in the state playoffs in two weeks.

Goals were scored by Trevor Davis, Mason Von Jess, Matthias Paltauf, and Tim Manning. Assisting on the goals were Joseph Robinson, Tim Manning and Trevor Davis. Evan Golembeske was solid on defense and Daniel Manning made 15 saves in goal. The Mighty Mite A's had only 8 skaters on which to draw upon for the win.
Lake Group Media Mite A - 4 Simsbury Mite A - 1
Goals each by Mason Von Jess and Tim Manning, with assists from Evan Golembeske and Matthias Paltauf were all that were needed to silence the Simsbury suburbanites. Chris Sidebotham and Joseph Robinson provided outstanding offense and Daniel Manning made 11 saves for the win.
MEDInstill Girls U14 Tier II - 7 Central Park Lady Hawks - 1
The MEDInstill Girls U14 Tier team played team hockey tonight. Fallon Oeser led the way with two goals and an assist, Ally Lavigne had two goals, One goal each from Alana Lopez, Tristin Izzo and Alice Bouchard, Meghan Dietter had two assists and Maddy Holland had an assist. Strong defensive play from Emma Hannan, Denise Landry, Breanna Barksdale and Holland. Lexi Long tallied 9 saves.
MEDInstill Girls U14 Tier II - 1 Westchester Vipers U14 - 1
A solid game from the MEDInstill Girls U14 Tier II team. Playing short handed was overcome by excellent teamwork. Skaters were where they needed to be and heads up passing lead to several attempts on goal. The MEDInstill girls recorded 31 shots on net. Maddy Holland scored on an awesome tip in from a rebounding shot by Ally Lavigne. The offense never stopped skating; Meghan Dietter and Fallon Oeser dominated the center position. Wingers Alana Lopez and Alice Bouchard fought hard on the boards to keep possession. Three in defense meant short breaks; Denise Landry, Breanna Barksdale and Emma Hannan handled it very well. Goalie Heather Ogden captured a few tricky tumbling pucks, she had 13 saves.
MEDInstill Girls U14 Tier II - 3 Greenwich - 3
Each team took goals in the second period. The MEDInstill team scored three goals with just over 2 minutes remaining. Denise Landry scored after receiving the puck from Ally Lavigne. Breanna Barksdale took advantage of an openning in the neutral zone and turned it into a goal. Tristin Izzo netted the third goal assisted by Shannon Bailey and Maddy Holland. This game clinched the team a spot in the GAL League playoffs. Good job team.
MEDInstill Girls U14 Tier II - 3 MidFairfield CT Stars - 5
Playing very well for the first two periods the MEDInstill girls U14 Tier team stayed even with the Stars. Tristin Izzo scored the first two goals, assists went to Emma Hannan and Maddy Holland. Breanna Barksdale netted the third goal unassisted. Relentless hustle from Meghan Dietter, Fallon Oeser, and Mary Lavigne. Heather Ogden was very active, at times she stretched across the entire crease, she ended with 34 saves.
Mite B - 0 Wonderland Wizard Mite B - 9
Being short 5 players wound up being a little too much to overcome as the Mite B's came up scoreless against a tough Wizards team. Emily Sanford and Colin Kennedy played well on offense and Shealyn Kennedy and Cameron Schopfer played well on defense. In goal, Bennett Danvers made 23 saves in the loss.
Mite B - 0 Enfield Mite A - 4
Playing against a very fast and skilled Enfield team our Mites played hard but were again held scoreless. Markus Paltauf and Milo Novitz played well on offense while Matthew Hassiak and Nicholas Conway-Drendel did well on defense. Goalie Ben Marano made 28 saves in the loss.
Mite B - 4 CT Clippers Mite Minor - 1
After playing a 1-1 game for the first two periods of play, our Mites put up 3 unanswered goals in the third for the win, including the last with 2 seconds on the clock. Goals, in order, came from Hunter Kolpak, Cody Wilson (2) and Colin Kennedy. Assisting on the goals were Kevin Costello and Bennett Danvers. Shealyn Kennedy played stellar defense and goalie Markus Paltauf made 19 saves for the win.
Mite B - 4 Ridgefield Mite B - 7
A second period comeback fell short against a tough Ridgefield squad on Saturday. Hunter Kolpak led the way with his second hat trick of the season and Colby Fowler added another goal. Assisting on the goals were Matthew Hassiak, Colin Kennedy and Cameron Schopfer. Bennett Danvers played solid on defense and goalie Ben Marano made 14 saves in the loss.
Mite B - 7 Northern Lights U8 - 0
A Valentines Day morning produced a solid shutout for the team. Cody Wilson led the team with his first hat trick of the season along with goals from Milo Novitz, Colin Kennedy, Nicholas Conway-Drendel and Cameron Schopfer. Assisting on the goals were Cody Wilson, Sean DeSantis, Cameron Schopfer, Milo Novitz (2), Emily Sanford, Hunter Kolpak (2) and Ben Marano. CJ DeLuca and Colby Fowler played stellar defense and goalie Markus Paltauf made 4 saves for his first shutout of the season.
Peewee B - 3 ECHO PWB - 4
The PeeWee B Ice Hawks fell a little short at the Bolton Ice Palace Saturday afternoon losing 4-3. Jack Sommerfeld scored twice and Mason Butts had a goal of his own. Dimity Wanag and David Demeo assisted on the goals. Jack Kolpak, Max Ryan, and Justin Thompson were busy on defense. Goaltenders Zack Schullery and Jon Spencer had 23 saves combined.
Peewee B - 2 Greater Bridgeport PWB - 2
The PWB Ice Hawks scored two goals in the third period to tie Greater Bridgeport 2-2 Sunday evening. Max Ryan and Payton Meyer scored for Northwest with Jack Kolpak assisting on one of the goals. Colton Loomis and Griffon McIntyre were solid on defense. Jon Spencer and Zack Schullery had 16 saves for Northwest.
Peewee B - 4 West Haven Peewee B - 1
The PWB Ice Hawk team earned a strong victory with a 4-1 win over West Haven PWB. Max Ryan scored twice with Jack Sommerfeld and Payton Meyer adding goals as well. John Funk, David Demeo and Meyer assisted on the goals. Griffon McIntyre and Colton Loomis provided the Hawks with stellar defense. Goaltenders Jon Spencer and Zach Schullery each had 7 saves a piece in the win.
Peewee B - 3 Kent Peewee A - 3
The PWB Ice Hawks tied the Kent PWA team Saturday morning 3-3. John Funk scored twice and Payton Meyer added a goal with David Demeo, Colton Loomis, Max Ryan and Jack Sommerfeld assisting on the goals. Justin Thompson and Jack Kolpak were strong on the defensive side of the game. Zach Schullery and Jon Spencer had 21 saves combined for 21 saves.
Peewee B - 6 Wonderland Wizards PWB Blue - 1
The PWB Ice Hawks played strong on sunday morning with a 6-1 win over the Wonderland Wizards 6-1. Max Ryan recorded a hat trick in the game with Jack Sommerfeld, David Demeo and Colton Loomis also scored. Justin Thompson lead the defense with solid play the entire game. Jon Spencer and Zach Schullery set the tone for the whole game by making outstanding saves in the game.
Peewee B - 3 Enfield PWA - 5
The PWB Ice Hawks showed up in Enfield four players short and battled in a tough loss to the Enfield Pee wee team 5-3. Goals were recorded by David Demeo, Payton Meyer, and Jack Sommerfeld. Zach Schullery and Colton Loomis assised on two of the goals. Mason Butts and John Funk played solid "D" for the Hawks. Jon Spencer had 13 saves for his team.
Peewee B - 2 Central PWB Red - 5
The PWB Ice Hawks played the Central PWB Red team at the Gunnery Sunday afternoon. The Hawks fought all game long and fell a little short in a 5-2 loss. Dimity Wanag and Jack Sommerfeld scored for the Hawks while Isaac Purdy had an assist. Jack Kolpak and Griffon McIntyre were busy on the defensive side of the game. Jon Spencer and Zach Schullery combined for 26 saves in goal.
Southbury Heritage Hotel Peewee A - 8 Central B Blue - 0
A solid win by the PWA team. Goals were scored by Tyler Hoadley (3), Tommy Nisco, Nick Behney, Brian Manzer, Jameson Steinhardt and Jack Kennedy. Assists were added by Brian Manzer (2), Nick Behney, Tommy Nisco, Jack Kennedy, Tyler Hoadley, Riley Zimmerman (2) and Patrick Donovan. Peter Mehler and MacKenzie Schopfer were solid on defense. Goalie Alex Fortuna had 15 saves.
Southbury Heritage Hotel Peewee A - 3 Greater Bridgeport A1 - 3
An evenly matched game today! Goals scored by Nick Behney (2) and Brian Manzer with assists added by Tommy Nisco, Noelle Capriglione and Riley Zimmerman. Solid defense by Natalie Capriglione and Ray Borsari. Goalie Alex Fortuna had 16 saves.

Great effort by the PeeWee A team that lead to a shutout. Goals were scored by Tommy Nisco, Nick Behney (3), Ray Borsari (2), Natalie Capriglione and Jameson Steinhardt. Assists were added by Noelle Capriglione, Tyler Hoadley, Riley Zimmerman, Jack Kennedy, Tommy Nisco (2), Marisa McLaughlin and Patrick Donovan. Solid defense by Peter Mehler and MacKenzie Schopfer. Goalie, Alex Fortuna, had 9 saves for the shutout.

Outstanding passing by the entire team led the PeeWee A team to control this game! Goals were scored by Tommy Nisco, Nick Behney, Marisa McLaughlin, Jameson Steinhardt (3), Ray Borsari, Brian Manzer and Riley Zimmerman. Assists were added by Marisa McLaughlin, Jack Kennedy, Riley Zimmerman (2), MacKenzie Schopfer, Tyler Hoadley, Patrick Donovan (2), Brian Manzer, Tommy Nisco and Jameson Steinhardt. Solid defense by Ray Borsari and Noelle Capriglione. Goalie, Alex Fortuna, had 13 saves for the win.
Squirt A - 2 Greater Bridgeport Squirt A1 - 1
In a very exciting game, the Northwestern Squirt A's beat the Greater Bridgeport Squirt A1's 2 - 1 at Canterbury. Goals were scored by Jack Hannan and Tabor Wanag, with assists by Wanag and Destiny Claxton. Strong defense by Jonah Lavigne and Tommy Schneider and 19 saves by goalie Ben Berg kept Bridgeport scoreless for the second and third periods.
Squirt A - 4 ECHO Squirt A - 2
In a hard-fought game at Canterbury, the Northwestern Icehawk Squirt A's beat the ECHO Squirt A team 4 - 2. Goals were scored by Jack Hannan, Clay Hoadley, Destiny Claxton, and Nate Capriglione, with assists by Hannan, Hunter Colburn and Griffin Smith. Tommy Schneider and Jonah Lavigne offered strong defense, and goalie Ben Berg had 21 saves between the pipes.
